Bonny Blue earrings

Here’s the latest addition to my ever-growing earring collection – Bonny Blue earrings. As always they are super-quick and easy to make.

Yarn – 2 colours of crochet cotton (white and blue) – only small amounts needed.
Hook – 1.5 mm.
Notions – earring hooks.

Pattern (English terms used)

Finished size – 2.5 cm in diameter

With white make 2 chain.

1st round: 6 dc into 2nd chain from hook. Join with a slip st into 1st dc. Break off white and join in blue.

2nd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, [2 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (12 dc)

3rd round: 1 ch, 1 dc into same stitch as chain,6 ch, 1 dc into same stitch [1 dc, 6 ch, 1 dc] into next 11 stitches, sl st into 1st dc. (12 loops) Fasten off.

Attach earring hooks to the end of one of the petals.

All done, now your Bonny Blue earrings are ready to wear.

New book and new tactics

Grace has a new book, Creepy Cute Crochet by Christen Haden.

The Grim Reeper is rather cute, as are the Knight and the Ninja. Grace has gone off to Liverpool to buy some black wool - a pink vampire just has no credibility!

Well Eve was right about the Kidsilk Haze scarf - You'll regret it she said - and she was right. I have made hardly any progress on the scarf and it isn't enjoyable knitting it, despite the nice and easy pattern - I just hate that yarn so much. So - last night I decided to change tactics - I frogged the knitted scarf and now I'm crocheting one instead. It is so much easier to crochet with this yarn than to knit. It's just as impossible to undo if you've made a mistake, so plenty of care needed but the pace of the project has notched up considerably. I'm doing a shell trellis pattern which goes really quickly and looks nice and airy. I had crocheted more in an hour than I had managed to knit in a week. The future of Kidsilk Haze is clearly with the crochet hook - I may even get to like it!!

But maybe I should wait until the scarf is finished before I get carried away!!

Ravenscar - a new project

As a treat I started a new project yesterday. The pattern is Ravenscar from Rowan magazine 45. I have been meaning to make this for sometime but as I wanted to use wool rather than cotton it seemed more of an Autumn knit rather than a Summer one. The original pattern calls for All Seasons cotton but I prefer to knit with wool. I have chosen Twilley's Freedom Spirit which is 100% wool and an absolutely gorgeous colour. The pattern is ever so simple, integrated button bands, only one button hole. However it isn't at all boring. The ribbed pattern makes it interesting enough to want to keep going but straightforward enough to read or watch television whilst knitting it - perfect. I made excellent progress yesterday whilst watching Formula 1 (another win for Barrichello) I'm up to the armholes of the back already.

Gloria, the fish sister

Meet Gloria. She's a fish sister to the fish brothers. The pattern is from Nicki Trench's brilliant book that Grace got for her birthday. She's a very feminine fish - I had originally decided that I was going to make a fish called Gregory, but the end result was far too girly for that name. I love the colours - they are my cheer-up colours - I can never be blue for long when I see something yellow and pink.

Feeling blue - what shall I do?

I'm just coming to the end of this year's Open University course - Exploring Science. There's only the end of course assignment to complete and then I can relax. It's been very demanding but the subject matter has been fascinating. I'm glad I've done the course but I'll be even gladder when I can put my workbooks away. It was all getting a bit much yesterday - everything seemed to be too much - I think it's the biology - I hate that subject - so I've given myself the day off from the assignment today to try to relax somewhat. I've made a list of all the fun little things I want to do when I don't have to study - it's keeping me going at the moment.

Needless to say, knitting and crocheting continue regardless. The sweater I'm making with the Sirdar crofter fairisle-effect wool is about halfway done. Here's a pic of the back.

I decided to make the front a bit more interesting by putting in a buttoned opening but it's quite difficult to match up the random stripes on each half of the front - hopefully it will turn out OK.

After knitting Tender - the kidsilk haze cardi - I had 2 balls of yarn leftover. Although I don't like (understatement) the yarn, it seems a shame not to use it up as it is gorgeous once it's knitted up. So I'm using part of the leftovers to make a scarf. The pattern is A Little Obsession by Leslie Bernard and it's in the Ravelry library. I can't knit fast with this yarn so it's taking a while to knit but the pattern is ever so simple.

Formula 1 on the television this weekend - from Monza. That should mean quite a bit of knitting gets done. To cheer myself up, I may start a new project with the yarn recently added to the stash - variety is the spice of life.

Frankie finished

Eve loves her new cardi. It looks so comfortable and warm. She may never take it off ever again!

The pattern is Frankie by Kim Hargreaves from her Breeze book. I used Robin DK wool because Eve was very particular about the colour and this was the shade she wanted. The pattern was very easy to knit and the wool knitted up beautifully.

I originally bought 6 100g balls of the wool but only used 3 1/2 balls so I should be able to squeeze at least one more project out of the yarn.

Pretty Poppy Earrings

I recently bought a bag of crochet cottons in various colours including a rather vibrant red. As soon as I saw the colour I knew I was going to make some poppy earrings.

As with all my other earrings, they are so quick to make and use a very small amount of yarn. I used Coats crochet cotton #12 and a 1.5mm hook. Here’s how I made them:

Yarn – 2 colours of crochet cotton (black and red) – only small amounts needed.
Hook – 1.5 mm.
Notions – earring hooks.

Pattern (English terms used)

Back to normal?

Things finally seem to be settling down again after Grace's birthday. Chris has finally gone back to work, Eve is back at school on Thursday and Grace starts university in a few weeks time. It feels like forever since I've had the house to myself.

The book Eve gave Grace for her birthday is brilliant, Super-Cute crochet by Nicki Trench.

There are 35 different patterns for cute animals and all of them have a witty introduction, highlighting their characters. We are told that Alphonso the alpaca owns an Internet business selling Alpaca wool and flies kites in his spare time. While Alan the lion plays the saxophone in a ska band.

Grace and I have already made a chick each. I made Rita, the pink chick, rather wide-eyed and innocent. Grace made Lancelot, a chick who commands great respect!

I have my eye on one of the fish brothers next. Grace has almost completed the pickle the dog pattern. She just has to sew him together (I think she's hoping I'm going to volunteer for this!!). She's so pleased with her creations that she has joined Ravelry so that she can show off her goodies. Her Ravelry name is Smiles-A-Lot.

There have been Formula 1 races the last two weekends so Eve's boyfriend cardi is coming on a treat. I hope to have it finished by the end of this week. Then I can concentrate on knitting for me - how wonderfully self-indulgent.

Grace's birthday

Grace had a wonderful 18th birthday. Lots of lovely presents, plenty of delicious meals out and extra helpings of fun.

Wow! I can't believe she's all grown up.

As her main present she got a new camera, so I'll be able to borrow it.

New projects and stressful times

I've just started knitting Frankie from Kim Hargreaves's Breeze. This is a baggy comfortable cardi that eve has had her eye on for a while. we took a bit of time choosing the wool as Eve had a specific shade of grey in mind and wasn't prepared to compromise. She patiently waited until she found the right shade. It's a lightish shade of grey, dark silver maybe. It looks good, I always think grey is a very versatile colour to wear.

The cardi is double knitting on 3.75mm needles and basically plain stocking stitch. There's Formula 1 on this weekend and the World Athletics Championships are coming to an end so plenty of knitting time to make good progress.

We had a shopping trip this week to Abakhans, Liverpool and I came home with an enormous bag of wool. I vaguely know what I'm going to knit with most of it but it'll be a while before I'm allowed anywhere a wool shop again!

It's been a stressful week this week. Grace's A level results were out on Thursday. We needn't have worried - she is a star - 4 grade As - we couldn't ask for more.

Tomorrow is her 18th birthday so I've been running round getting organised for that. It's going to be the best birthday ever - plenty of photos to follow. It's all very exhausting.

Tender - finished

At last! I finished Tender last night.

The pattern is from Kim Hargreaves, Nectar collection. I used Rowan Kidsilk Haze and it only took 4 balls.

I love the shape of the cardi but the sleeves are rather tight, even though I've only got skinny arms. I would have liked it better if it was a bit longer as well.

Overall I think it might grow on me- it is nice and light but surprisingly warm and not at all tickly.

I don't think I'll be using Kidsilk Haze again. For a start it is too pricey - I was lucky to get 6 balls at a knock down price of £8 in total. It is horrible to knit with, too fluffy and it is difficult to see the stitches. I'm just glad it is finished.

Home again

Just got back through the door after our holiday to Wales - details to follow.

Happy Birthday Doris

My mother-in-law's birthday today - a big 85!! - and still going strong.

Here's the card I made for her.

It's crocheted flowers and leaves with beading detail in the centre of each flower. She loves the card - but then again she thinks I'm wonderful anyway!!

London

Last Saturday Eve and I had a day-trip to London. We were going to see some of the art galleries, especially Tate Britain. It was only when we were sitting on the train that we remembered how awful the pendolino trains are. We aren't very good travellers at the best of times, but usually trains are the one form of transport that I don't get travel sick on - not any more. Those leaning trains are the worst. We had arrived at the station stocked up with knitting, novels and puzzle books but under the circumstances we were only able to sit and concentrate on not feeling sick. The one good thing is the train is very fast - we were in London in just over two hours.

We visited Tate Britain and the National Gallery. A bit disappointed with the Tate, they didn't have many of their PreRaphaelite collection on display. Although we did see Millais's Ophelia, which we had been looking forward to seeing.

The National Gallery was better, in that we weren't expecting too much from it. We could have spent hours more there, but our feet were complaining bitterly.

On the whole it was a great day out

- sitting on the edge of the fountain in Trafalgar Square, eating our lunch,

- walking along the Thames,

- watching the woman with the hoover on the fourth plinth in Traf Sq.

Remind me, though, next time we say "Hey let's have a day out in London!" I need to take travel sickness pills before we go!!!

Daisy Daisy earrings

These dainty earrings are so easy to make and look really pretty, especially if the sun is shining. I suddenly felt inspired to make them and in less than an hour I was wearing them. I used Coats mercer crochet cotton #20 and a 1.5mm hook. Here’s how I made them:

Yarn – 2 colours of crochet cotton (white and yellow) – only small amounts needed.
Hook – 1.5 mm.
Notions – earring hooks.

Pattern (English terms used)

Finished size – 2.5cm in diameter

Base ring: using white make 6ch, sl st to join into a ring.

1st round: 7ch (counts as 1 tr and 4 ch), [1 tr into ring, 4 ch] 7 times, sl st into 3rd of 7 ch. (8 spaces)

2nd round: [1 dc, 1 htr, 1 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc] into each space. Sl st into 1st dc. Fasten off white.

Centre: Attach yellow thread to foundation ring between any of the trebles. 3 ch (counts as 1 tr), 1 tr into same space, [2 tr into next space] 7 times, sl st into 3rd of 3 chain. Fasten off.

Attach earring hooks to one of the petals through the top of the treble.

All done, now you can wear your own daisy daisy earrings.

Trevor and fame at last

Most of my knitting projects are at that stage where you lose interest - finished the back but still a long way to go. So I decided to make a little something to make me feel productive. That little something is now called Trevor.

He's the Tiny striped turtle pattern by KristieMN. I made him with DK wool and he measures about 7 cm from nose to tail. Very easy and quick to make and very cute.

A few days ago Chris and I had a night away in Lancaster (forgot to take the camera!). We found a lovely pub in the evening called The John O'Gaunt and spent a relaxing few hours sampling the beer. Unfortunately the weather was pretty awful, heavy rain, so we ended up coming home early the next day. Nevertheless, I managed to make good progress with Grace's Wine dark sea sweater on the journey and it was good to get away even for a short time.

Whilst browsing, I've just discovered a new website that's a bit like ravelry but covers all crafts, called mycraftivity. Someone has included a link to my compass rose earrings and this is what they said about them,

"I don't think these crochet compass rose earrings will be much help finding your way when you're lost, but they will help you to look your best as you ask strangers for directions."

Wow, I like it.

Rowan wish list

Well I've got my copy of the new Rowan magazine, number 46. Some of the designs are a bit iffy (as usual) but there are some really promising patterns as well. Here are the ones I've picked out as future knits.

This is Rona. It's my favourite pattern in the magazine.

It is crocheted in Felted Tweed and I think it looks really stunning. I would have to think carefully about colour choices.

This is Stockport.

I like the shaping and it's quite different to my usual knits. It is knitted in Cocoon. I think I'd like to knit it in a nice rich jewel colour.

This is Wentworth.

It is knitted in Kidsilk Haze so I would definitely have to think about substituting another yarn. I love the multi colours and it would be great for using up odds and ends. It reminds me of a pattern in an earlier Rowan magazine, I'll have to check it out.

Finally this is Lochalsh.

Knitted in two colours of Felted Tweed, I think I would be tempted to incorporate more colours and get rid of the pompoms!

Harry Potter and the Frenzied Housewife

Well, the summer holidays are well and truly here and everyone is under my feet. I'm starting to feel frazzled and frenzied already. Everyone else is in holiday mood and winding down nicely whereas I still have to try and get things done. It's the same every time - roll on September when I can have the house back to myself - what's the point in being a housewife if you have to share the house with everyone else?

Today we went to see the new Harry Potter film. I've read the book twice but that was ages ago so I couldn't quite remember the storyline. The film was really good - funny, scary and sad - more enjoyable than I though it would be.

Meanwhile on the knitting front, I've reached that point in time where I'm waiting for the Autumn/Winter collections to come out. Rowan have already got a preview on their website - and they look quite promising. No news yet from Kim Hargreaves.

I've got lots to keep me going in the meantime, so I shouldn't really be thinking too far ahead. I'm currently knitting Tender by Kim Hargreaves from the Nectar collection.

I've completed the back and I'm part way through the left front. I'm using Kidsilk Haze and I hate it. I'm sure the finished article will be wonderful but knitting with this yarn is a real pain. I got the yarn ages ago at an amazingly discounted price otherwise I wouldn't have bought it and I've being looking for a pattern to knit with it ever since. Tender is virtually all stocking stitch but because the yarn is so difficult to knit with you really have to concentrate. Normally I like to read while knitting or watch TV but you can't with this yarn so it's very frustrating. Anyway that's my moan out of the way!

I'm also knitting a vintage style tee for myself. I'm designing the pattern myself and writing it up as I go along - so it's quite a challenge.

A few weeks ago I bought this lovely Mirasol Hacho DK wool.I'm going to use it to make Grace a polo sweater - I can't wait to start it to see how it knits up. When I've finished the front of Tender I'll allow myself the treat of starting the back of this sweater - an incentive to get on with knitting Tender!

Rosalind finished

Well here it is, finished as promised. I am so pleased with this cardi. I know I say I am pleased with every thing I knit when I have first finished it, but this garment is so beautiful.

Here are the details:

Pattern - Rosalind by Gloriana at A Mingled Yarn

Yarn used - Rowan Cashsoft Double Knitting - 7 balls used

Needles used - 4mm

The pattern was lovely to knit, very clear instructions. The fit is perfect and it looks so feminine. I wasn't sure about the colour after I had bought the yarn but I'm glad I chose it now. Cashsoft DK is perfect yarn, so soft, easy to knit with and looks good finished - if only it was a little bit cheaper!

The only modifications I made to the pattern, were to knit the button bands and fronts all in one, and I made the neckline lower.

I was going to wear this to go to the pub last night but Chris got stung by a wasp on his big toe so was unable to walk comfortably. We ended up with a quiet night in and a bottle of wine so no one got to see my lovely cardi. He has promised me a night out later in the week to compensate.

On trying to be productive, whilst avoiding the housework etc

It's three months since I started this blog and two months since I joined ravelry. It has certainly made me more productive. Seeing other people's finished projects, I feel I should be churning something out on a regular basis. The other day I got this lovely crochet book out of the library.

It's called 201 crochet motifs, blocks, projects and ideas and it's by Melody Griffiths. It's full of beautiful floral motifs. This is ideal - when I feel the urge to complete a project, I can make something quick and stunning from this book.

In the meantime I am making excellent progress with Rosalind. It knits up so quickly and I might even be able to finish it over the weekend. There's cricket (2nd Test Match) and golf (Open at Turnberry) on the TV so hopefully I'll be able to sit around quite a bit over the next few days. Chris has now started his 6 weeks holiday, so he's got his feet up already - I keep telling him, us housewives don't get holidays.

The jungle that used to be the back garden desperately needs some attention - but I'm hoping that it will rain so I've got an excuse not to do it!

Grace is away this week. She's completing the gold expedition for her Duke of Edinburgh award. 5 days and 4 nights walking and camping in the Lake District. If last time is anything to go by, she'll come home with rotting feet, serious BO and severe sleep deprivation. I can't image she'll ever want to look at a tent ever again. Whilst she's away I am busy making and planning for her 18th - all very secret, so no pics or details yet.

Thomasina finished

Well it was definitely worth the effort. Grace loves her new top. It looks really smart and fits well. The red colour is difficult to photo, it's not as tomato-coloured as it looks.

The pattern was Thomasina by Marie Wallin in Rowan The Milk Cotton Collection. The pattern calls for 7 balls of milk cotton DK but I used Sirdar Snuggly DK and it only took 4 1/2 balls. The yarn is really soft and great to knit with. The cabling wasn't too demanding once I had colour-coded the charts, but by the end of it I did say I didn't want to see another cable for a while. A nice plain stocking stitch is what is needed now.

Here is Grace in her crocheted hat. She wore it last night to go for a meal with her friends. When she told them she made it herself they told her to get a life - some people just don't understand!
