Wet and Windy January

With this miserable damp weather we're having at the moment, we haven't felt inclined to venture out much.  It's been far nicer to stay warm and cosy in the house.

January seems to have got off to a slow start.

This has given me plenty of time for knitting and crocheting over the past week, but I'm determined that I should make time for other crafts.  I think tomorrow might be an embroidery day.

The colourful socks I cast on on New Year's day are now complete.

I love the way the colours pattern around in a spiral.  You can see full details of the yarn I used on my Ravelry page, here.

I've knitted these toe up again and I'm finding it a very satisfying way to make the socks.  I had said that I wanted to be more adventurous and try different techniques, so I'm glad I tried this.  At the moment I'm limited to the fish lips kiss heel because I don't know how to do a heel flap for a toe up sock, but I've found some patterns that will help, so next month's socks will see me trying yet another new technique.  That's the great thing about sock knitting - there's so many different ways to knit a sock, it's never boring.

I've also been doing some crocheting - another basket recycle.

I deliberately chose colours I don't usually go for and I like the combination, it makes a nice change.  I used Stylecraft Special DK in Storm Blue, Teal, Sage, Claret, Sherbet and Lime.

So now I'm back with my Fair Isle knitting - a few rows each day means that it is moving along and growing quite nicely.

It looks like it's going to be a quiet January but hopefully a very crafty one.  Enjoy your weekend.

  1. Your socks are fabulous!! You are certainly right that it is better to stay in crafting at the moment, it is raining so much, in fact I am sitting by the window now and can hear it pouring down outside. Not nice is it. Stay inside and knit and crochet!! xx

  4. love the colours of the socks. I have 2 pairs on the go at the moment. 1 ankle high and 1 knee high pair. I always wear knee highs around the house in winter along with cosy woollen slippers. Its absolutely throwing it down here in Derby.

    1. Thanks Caz, the weather doesn't seem to be showing any signs of improving. I haven't knitted knee high socks before, I've been making ankle socks because they're quicker! But knee high would be more practical at the moment.

  6. good pattern is Sirdar 9135 (Crofter wool) Any dk will do though. knee highs,or slouchy, arm warmers, leg warmers, wrist warmers.age 4yrs to Adult. Easy..done on 2 needles.( cos I can't manage 4) ha ha. You just have to seam on either side of the foot and the back leg seam. You could probably do the leg on a circular till you got down to the heel.I've done one pair in Crofter and one pair in Splash that looks like Fair Isle when knitted up (cheat)

  7. Lovely socks Janet, I was going to try to make a pair a month but I don't think it's going to happen because as usual I've committed myself to other things, the jumper is looking lovely and so is your basket. We actually have sunshine now after a misty start. Have a great week. :) x

    1. Thank you Linda. Making a pair of socks a month has been quite difficult to keep up at times, but I'm enjoying wearing the finished products now.
