I kept thinking you could just use the trim features on a seamed sweater. Also, Elizabeth Zimmerman aded short rows to th back of in-the-round yokes to improve the neckline fit. It firms it up. Gives it body. Only tried top down once. Didn't like all those stitches on and I found it too awkward to hold. I'm an old fashioned knitter too. Nothing wrong with that.
